Goodbye Mary
One of the aspects of this web diary I wrestle with most is how much personal stuff to put in. Part of the stated aim of this site is to "demystify politics" and to show some (but not too much) of the personal aspect. While we all know in our heads that politicians are just (all too) human, part of the mystique of people in my position is that they are portrayed (mostly by others) as somehow being above all that average human stuff. Anyway, none of that has that much to do with the fact that one of my Aunts (or to be more meaningful, my Mum's sister) has died today, beyond just giving a small insight into personal stuff. I know this is something that is of no consequence to anyone reading this, but as I maintain a site which publicly records bits of my life, I feel it is unfair not to note it. I note Mary's life and its passing. I don't pretend to profess great grief (and it's nobody's business if I feel it anyway), but it feels disrespectful not to mark it and also pleasing to have the opportunity to do so. She made an impact on me – good and bad as anyone with a life-spark does, and she certainly had that – and I will always remember many things about her as long as I live. I guess that means she lives on. A good thing I think. |
