A Musical Interlude - Tom Waits
time for a brief break from politics..... Tom Waits has always been hovering around the edges of musicians I like. I’ve got one of his later albums, and last year I heard his 1987 song “Way Down in the Hole”, which clearly helped inspire one of Nick Cave’s better known songs, , “Red Right Hand” (it appears on the fabulous Original Seeds compilations that I’ve written about previously). An email list I’m on recently had a posting of an article in The Observer, listing Tom Waits’ 20 favourite albums. There’s no Nick Cave in his list, but there’s one Leonard Cohen. It’s certainly given me some ideas next time I go buying CDs. The music he lists wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but the descriptions he gives of the various albums are interesting reading in their own right. |
